Subsea Pipeline Flange Fitting — Closed-Die Forging, Alloy 4130

A near-net-shape closed-die flange fitting for a subsea pipeline tie-in, forged from 4130 alloy billet into a dedicated die impression to hold the bolt-circle and bore tolerances the connection requires without extensive post-forge machining.

The project

Subsea flange connections carry a tight bolt-circle and sealing-face tolerance that would be expensive to hold from a plain open-die blank through machining alone, so the order justified a dedicated closed-die impression despite the tooling cost — the die produced a near-net-shape forging that needed only finish machining on the bore and sealing face rather than removing the bulk of the material by machining from a simple round blank. 4130's combination of hot workability and good weldability made it a natural fit for a subsea fitting that would later be welded into the pipeline spool.

The finished flange forging carried full ultrasonic and magnetic-particle inspection per the operator’s subsea-component specification before release, with material certification and inspection records retained per the project’s traceability requirement.
